SIU called in after man dies following interaction with Toronto police

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 26-year-old man Sunday following an “interaction” with Toronto police.

Police went to the Finch Avenue East and Leslie Street area at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night after receiving a call about “a man with a knife making threats and in mental distress,” the SIU media release said.

Two officers took the man into custody where he then went into medical distress, the SIU said.

Officers reportedly provided medical care until paramedics arrived, the SIU said.

The victim was transported to hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead just after midnight.

The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

“Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case,” the SIU said. “The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow (Monday).”

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at:
